Active Cultures, the vernacular theatre of Maryland creates smart and juicy theatre for a diverse, multigenerational audience.

Our Vision

Active Cultures taps the alchemy of the American melting pot by searching out the local, investigating the inherent, and poking at the paradigms of our culture through the creation of highly theatrical, provocative, imaginative productions. Active Cultures catalyzes the work of professional artists through collaboration and instills self confidence, enhances creativity, and encourages problem-solving through arts education.

Outreach

Through arts education, Active Cultures Theatre, the vernacular theatre of Maryland will:

expand the possible—through role-playing students find parts of themselves they did not realize existed.
celebrate risk taking—through problem solving and creative action students learn the value of putting their ideas and actions on the line.
encourage three-dimensional thinking—by taking the ethereal and making it spatial and active, students expand their knowledge of the rules governing time and space.
concretize power dynamics—by portraying humans in action, students see, hear, feel and think about the interplay of gender, race, age, class, ability and education.
oppose leadership to cooperation—while working as part of a team, students learn to express their individuality while collaborating.
revel in practical math, physics and engineering: through the creation of stage works, students constantly develop and mathematical and scientific reasoning.
